Welcome to Reveling in Raw!
I'm a certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator (VLCE), nutrition nerd, and passionate advocate for animals, who is head-over-heels in love with the raw foods lifestyle. I live in Pittsburgh in an all-vegan household with my partner and our gregarious fur child. I am vegan always and forever, but I do not follow a 100% raw diet. I believe that the disease-protective, grounding, and soul-opening nature of a high-raw vegan diet can do miraculous things and is the most ethical way to live.
Several years ago, I was abruptly overcome by an unidentified illness–that was later traced back to toxic mold running rampant in our rental, and yes, we moved as soon as we found it–that left me bedridden for a couple of months and severely disabled for many more. Frustrated that doctors, including several specialists, could give me no answers, I took my fate into my own hands. I wanted to find something I could do to improve my quality of life, and through this search for healing, I discovered the power of food as medicine.
I dug deeper into the science behind my vegan ideology. Within me grew a great reverence for plant foods and how they nourish the body. I'd been vegan for years but was an oreos and fried tofu kind of vegan. I started eating mostly raw, which included daily green juices, and the only cooked foods I ate were lightly steamed vegetables and whole plant foods. I slowly felt life returning to my body, in some ways exceeding my former beliefs about the limits of my health. Of course, food is only one facet of the healing paradigm. There are many other healing practices I've introduced to my life since then, but raw foods have been the most powerful force in regaining my health. I still have a ways to go, but when I look back at how far I've come, I'm rendered speechless.
I began to be filled with such exuberance when I'd share my new-found knowledge with others that I realized my illness was the catalyst for finding my true passion and purpose in this life. My recovery since then has been driven by my desire to create my best self and help others realize their best selves as well. My dream is to firmly plant myself in the health and wellness spectrum as a source of knowledge, guidance, inspiration, and hope. I've committed to living this life with integrity and seek to expand my knowledge whenever possible so that I can best serve others. My first major step toward this was in November 2013, when I obtained my VLCE certification though Victoria Moran's Main Street Vegan Academy. I have my sights set on some more traditional education plans in the future, too, but for now I am focused on building my coaching practice.
